My Turn: Improving Kings Beach meeting Wednesday
January 18, 2010
Very exciting things are happening in Kings Beach, and it is going to have tremendous benefits for the workforce and families here.
I have been a resident of Kings Beach for most of my life. I attended our local grammar school, had my mother twice as a teacher (no, not for the same grade!) and attended Tahoe Truckee High School in the days of big snow and bus rides over the and#8220;Short Cutand#8221; called Highway 267.-
I run the Crown Motel that my family has owned and operated for 54 years and where I grew up, right on Main Street, Kings Beach. The Crown is in the heart of the downtown, on the lakeside.
I’m inextricably woven into the fabric of this community. I’ve lived in this community much of my life and currently reside at Little Bear cottages. I speak Spanish pretty well and I know first hand the struggles the majority of families in Kings Beach suffer. I can tell you this: anything we can do to improve life for our neighbors is the right thing to do.
Not only do our families need housing, but older adults and single people without families and our disabled, also need dependable, affordable, quality places to live: places that are warm, dry and dignified.-
There are some who say that because there are vacancies in Kings Beach, there will be-no demand for new housing. These vacancies are-a result of-the current economy and we know that this situation will not last forever. And it must be noted that most vacancies are in small, sub-standard units many of which were built as summer lodging in the 40s and 50s.-

I know because my family owns Little Bear Cottages, which have such units. We have four studios vacant at Little Bear (all about 200 square feet) that were originally built without any cooking facilities.-
Many of us have bedrooms bigger than this and I bet some of-us have closets bigger than these and#8220;apartmentsand#8221;. There is no doubt that when the DOMUS project is completed we will lose some tenants. However, this does not the change the fact that people deserve to live in bigger, modern units designed to meet the needs of today’s lifestyle.-
Both the Kings Beach Housing NOW project and the Kings Beach Core Improvement Project are working to improve things in Kings Beach for not just the people but also the environment.
Importantly, they will implement storm water drainage improvements, a safe roadway through town and sidewalks most of which are non-existent today.-
Most-people I have talked to support these improvements and want to see our area get the reinvestment it deserves. Anyone who has lived in the Tahoe Truckee region knows the existing conditions in Kings Beach. Even in the best of times, we have seen little if any redevelopment.–
Are these projects perfect? Maybe not. However, on the North Shore we have often sacrificed the good for the perfect and now is the time, to come together in support of improving Kings Beach.
I invite you to come to the community open house next week at the Kings Beach Elementary School and#8212; Wednesday, Jan. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m., to learn more about these two projects.
