My Turn: Please give this holiday season

Kings Beach

When Gary and I moved to Kings Beach from Washington, D.C., we were struck by the commitment of the Tahoe community (including second-home owners) to philanthropy.

The Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation (TTCF) is the philanthropic organization which has worked more than 10 years in the region with most groups dedicated to a variety of local causes (health and welfare, arts, youth, environment, etc.).

These are particularly tough times for some of our residents ” not enough money for rent, utilities, food, much less holiday gifts for the family. Domestic violence is increasing and counseling is needed. The charities are operating at capacity.

There are several ways you can help at any monetary level. If you’re passionate about a specific cause, e.g., helping children, domestic violence, etc., we encourage you to send a check to one of the many non profits in our region.

However, if you are interested in giving gifts to the community by supporting all charities, you can write one check that would touch every person and charity in our region through TTCF’s grant making program (which involves many committed citizens).

TTCF’s board and staff have a wealth of knowledge and expertise about the North Tahoe community. If you don’t want to take the time to research each charity to determine which ones are effective and need your contributions, you can give through TTCF. Staff and volunteers are constantly meeting with nonprofit organizations and ensure that every dollar you give is put to good use.

Giving through TTCF also multiplies the impact of your gift. Your donation is pooled with gifts from others, making it possible for local donors to work together for the common good of our community.

It doesn’t matter who you give to this year, but please, please … just give. Thank you for taking the time to read this article. Have a blessed holiday. Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation can be reached at (530) 567-1776.
