Newly designed Sierra College, Tahoe and#8211;Truckee Insights open to community

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Dr. Kim Bateman, Dean of Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee is pleased to invite community members to Sierra College Insights, an interactive educational event series designed for inquisitive and interesting community members including current high school and college students. Each month an academic expert will facilitate an out-of-the ordinary presentation on the Tahoe-Truckee campus located at 11001 College Trail in Truckee.
Launched shortly after Dr. Kim Bateman became dean of the Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee campus, the Experts and Insights Dean Lecture Series gained a strong following by showcasing lectures by regional experts across disciplines. Rather than sharing factual information and stories in a traditional lecture format, presenters will showcase inquiry based teaching techniques proven to promote thought, learning and discussion in the new monthly Sierra College Insights program.

The series will kick off with a focus on our surroundings. Will Richardson, Ph.D., Tahoe Institute for Natural Scienceand#8217;s director of applied science and co-executive director, will lead a nature walk on Friday, Sept. 7. The program begins with socializing and refreshments at 6 p.m. followed by a walk on campus grounds at 6:30 p.m.
Richardson has been birding in the Tahoe area since 1994. Originally a migrating Tahoe resident spending summers running crews for the Point Reyes Bird Observatory and working on the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco in the fall, he finally settled in Truckee in 2001, and has been intensively studying the regionand#8217;s natural history and ecosystems ever since. He is working on a book about the birds of the Lake Tahoe basin and he has authored papers on chipmunks, butterflies, dragonflies, and his own discovery of the Tahoe basinand#8217;s second species of salamander. Richardson received his Ph.D. in ecology, evolution and conservation biology from the University of Nevada, Reno, studying bird communities in Sierra Nevada aspen habitats. Heand#8217;s never not birding.

The series will continue to be offered at no cost, however donations are encouraged and will serve as honoraria for the guest speakers. All collected donations will be given directly to the speaker on the night of the event.

Sierra College Insights is a monthly Friday evening series that takes place on the Tahoe-Truckee campus. Students, residents and visitors are welcome to attend.
