North Tahoe Middle students attend Honor Band

On Friday, Jan. 15, six students from North Tahoe Middle School traveled to California State University, Chico to attend the Northern California Jr. High Honor Band. Upon arrival to Chico, the students gathered with more than 60 students from various schools in order to prepare for a concert the following afternoon.

Students rehearsed a total of 12 hours under the direction of a guest conductor, Mr. Tom Candlish. During these rehearsals, students learned various musical ideas, tips and techniques from Mr. Candlish that would fully prepare them to showcase their musicianship at the concert.

The fun and challenging musical selections that were performed included and#8220;Syncopated Clockand#8221; by Leroy Anderson, and#8220;Semper Fidelesand#8221; by John Phillip Sousa, Pachelbeland#8217;s and#8220;Cannon in Dand#8221; arranged by Mr. Candlish, and arrangements of and#8220;Harry Potterand#8221; and and#8220;Amazing Grace.and#8221;



The six students had to go through a rigorous audition process in order to be selected for honor band. This process included preparing a very challenging solo and two scales, and creating a CD recording that was sent to judges, who selected the participants more than 30 schools throughout Northern California.

Once chosen, the honor students practiced and prepared selected music for many hours in addition to their regular band classes, with and without band director Shauna Gilberti.



The outstanding band students from North Tahoe Middle School who were selected to participate in this very educational and prestigious event were Dominic Antonucci and Mitchell Meyers on french horn, Zoe Anderson and Tara Gallant on flute, Annie Thompson on mallet percussion, and TJ Cornwell on clarinet.
