Note from the Superintendent: Wonderful progress so far this school year

Note from the Superintendent

We are several months into the school year, and there is a great deal to celebrate about what's right with Tahoe Truckee.

Each week I visit school sites and see first-hand the outstanding work that is underway in the classrooms. Our scholars are engaged, happy, and learning! We are lucky to have such dedicated educators and support staff throughout the entire district.

We hosted our fifth annual STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Fair on Thursday, Nov. 3. This year, in addition to some of the best business partners in this community, Tesla Motors joined the event as one of over 40 interactive booths that included local and regional experts.

Students and families had a great time exploring college and career options in the STEAM field. This event would not be possible without its dedicated volunteer committee and the generous sponsorships provided by the Rotary Club of Truckee, Parallax, the Excellence in Education Foundation, Martis Camp and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

Last week our Wellness Team and School Counselors hosted Challenge Days at our high schools. Challenge Days provide an interactive and empowering day for our freshmen students, and I appreciate the hard work our team dedicates to address the well-being of our scholars now and throughout the year.

Several of our school sites recently participated in Red Ribbon Week. The theme this year was "YOLO" (You Only Live Once). Be drug free." The campaign emphasizes the importance of making good decisions as you only live once.

It is all about our students being drug and alcohol free. We need to remember that this is a community issue, not just a student issue, and as parents and community members, set a positive example.

Safety is a top priority at our district. We have already had some snow in Tahoe Truckee and winter will be upon us before we know it, so it's time to start preparing!

New this year, based on input we've received from parents and staff, we are exploring the option of delayed starts, if conditions warrant. Parents and guardians would be notified at the normal "snow call" time if we implement a delayed start, and the period of delay (two hours) would be announced.

All school and bus schedules would match this delayed start time. In the event of a snow day, or a delayed start day, we will use our regular phone blast notifications, and information will be shared on our website and the snow phones.

Our TTUSD website — ttusd.org — has information about our snow day policies and procedures.

Please "save the date" and mark your calendars for Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, as I will be hosting a community-wide meeting and share a "State of the District Address." This will be a great opportunity to highlight all the amazing educational opportunities we have in our district.
