George Zissimos went home to his Lord on June 13, 2009. He died from complications of brain cancer while at home in Truckee.

George Zissimos went home to his Lord on June 13, 2009. He died from complications of brain cancer while at home in Truckee.He was born in San Francisco on April 5, 1932, the son of George and Polly Zissimos. His family moved to Greece when he was 5 and spend part of the next 11 years under the German occupation of World War II. His father served with the British Underground as part of the Greek resistance. He returned to California via Ellis Island in 1948 and graduated from Mission High School in San Francisco.George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and proudly served on the USS St. Paul during the Korean War. While serving in Korea he was introduced to a pen pal who became the love of his life, Tedra Gilkerson. They were married in 1954 and started their family in San Francisco following his honorable discharge from the Navy.George worked for ATandamp;T and the subsequent andamp;#8220;baby Bellsandamp;#8221; for the next 40 years. He and Tedra raised their two children, Anthony and Diana in Concord, Calif., where they lived until retirement. Upon retirement they moved to Truckee where they were active in their church and traveled extensively.He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Tedra; his son, Dr. Anthony and Sandi Zissimos of Truckee; his daughte,r Diana and David Rodriguez of Albuquerque; his sister, Adrina and Art Sofas of Reno; and his beloved grandchildren, Nicole, Rachel, and Stephen Zissimos; and Melissa, Nathaniel, and Rebecca Tarantino.George will be remembered as a faithful servant of the Lord, a loving husband, father and andamp;#8220;papouli.andamp;#8221;All are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, June 20, at the Sierra Bible Church in Truckee at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made andamp;#8220;in loving memory of George Zissimosandamp;#8221; to Courage To Be You Inc., 3031 Stanford Ranch Rd.
