Opinion: Martis Valley West the right project for Truckee-Tahoe
August 30, 2016
Here is a fact you may not know about the Martis Valley West Project: Because of the Martis Valley Community Plan, it will be the last housing development in Martis Valley.
The project is unique because it not only proposes to reduce the amount of development allowed in Martis Valley, it includes significant land conservation that will allow for public access and recreation. This is unprecedented when it comes to development projects.
The Martis Valley Community Plan currently allows for 1,360 residential units to be developed to the East of Highway 267. The proposed plan will instead locate residences closer to Northstar and will reduce the number of homes to be constructed from 1,360 units to 760.
I am grateful the Truckee Donner Land Trust and The Trust for Public Land purchased Waddle Ranch in 2007 from the Pritzker family, protecting it forever.
This land on the east side of 267, plus the addition of more than 40 miles of existing trails that are part of the private land which would be added if Martis Valley West is approved, would allow permanent public access to trails for mountain biking, snowmobiling and hiking.
As a resident of the area, I feel fortunate to be able to raise my family and pursue career opportunities in the Martis Valley and North Lake Tahoe. Originally relocating to the area nearly nine years ago for a job created by a Martis Valley community, I love the active, outdoor lifestyle our area affords.

I personally have hiked, snowshoed and recreated throughout the miles of trails on the East Parcel, and don't want that to change.
In addition, a portion of my husband's work is based in North Lake Tahoe and with the TRPA. We have one son and another on the way, and are fortunate they get to grow up in one of the most recreation-oriented and beautiful places in the world.
We want our sons to grow up enjoying access to hiking, biking, skiing or whatever outdoor activity their hearts desire — just like we moved here for. The Martis Valley West Project is a balanced plan that is right for Martis Valley.
