Opinion: We need to limit human noise pollution at Lake Tahoe

In last week’s newspapers, Toree Warfield did a wonderful job in her story, “As weather warms, birds of all kinds are springing into action at Lake Tahoe-Truckee,” reminding us to open our ears to the beautiful sounds of bird song in nature.

Reading this, however, reminds me of a growing problem in the Tahoe basin and beyond, which is the increase of human noise. Imagine going on the bird walk around the Village Green or anywhere trying to record bird song, only to be interrupted by the constant noise of cars honking and dinging as people lock their cars off in the distance.

All of our parks and recreation areas are filling up with these unnecessary human sounds. Anthropogenic noise has been shown to alter bird song because it is harder for several species to find mates. In addition to enjoying bird song this summer, I would like to remind the public to be aware of their noise pollution and speak out against unnecessary noise both locally and nationally.

One way to do so is by signing this petition in support of H.R. 3384 (Quiet Communities Act of 2015): https://wh.gov/iooac.
