Readers Write: A mockery

The Mourelatos Family

On June 25 at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board Meeting, Placer County Supervisor Bruce Kranz betrayed the public trust and made a mockery of the public process by leading an effort to turn down his staff’s recommended three-lane alternative for the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement project; a recommendation supported by a majority of the public and multiple organizations including the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the local chapter of the Sierra Club, the Sierra Business Council and the North Tahoe Business Association.

Sitting in the meeting, one was offended by Mr. Kranz’s behavior and dumbfounded by his position. Our current supervisor ignored his constituency being absent during much of the public comment period where many voiced support for three lanes. His position against this alternative was based on a pessimistic 20-year projection of future traffic volumes where he refused to believe staff commitments to implement parking and back street traffic calming mitigation measures as part of the implementation, far in advance of any projected need.

He ignored the Community Enhancement Project’s support of three-lanes whose projects would further develop parking and back street infrastructure. He ignored the three-lane endorsement of a majority of the local property owners committed to working with the county to make Kings Beach a place visitors drive to, not through. In short, Mr. Kranz has sought to condemn Kings Beach to be bisected by a five-lane freeway that represents the highest safety risk for pedestrians on Highway 28, the lowest potential for economic revitalization and has the least environmental benefits.

Given Mr. Kranz’s lack of leadership and unethical behavior, we have pulled our formal endorsement for his reelection and ask all those offended by his behavior to communicate your discontent to the TRPA Governing Board and Placer County Board of Supervisors.
