Readers Write: Nix those roundabouts
July 8, 2008
I have lived in Lake Tahoe for 30 years; at least 20 in Kings Beach and the last two years in Sierra Meadows in Truckee, where last year we got a roundabout. We are coping, learning to blend in non-stop traffic. This is the idea of a roundabout ” non-stop traffic. Thus four yield signs, no stop signs. So here does pedestrians fit in this scenario? These roundabouts are not at busy pedestrian crossings because drivers have much responsibility to watch for other vehicles in trying to blend non-stop traffic. You put these at a busy ped-crossing and you have a formula for accidents and death. Traffic needs to stop for pedestrians. Please do not mix these two.
