Ride of the Week

Ryan Salm/Sierra Sun

What type of truck is it? It is a 2007 Class 8 Tractor. Its 40 tons and designed to haul containers 60,000 pounds. Its 550-600 horsepower. What special features does it have? Its long-haul based for cross-country travel so it has an extended cab with bedding. What about the body of the tractor is newer then on older trucks? It has nice new curves that its predecessors did not have making it more aerodynamic. When the driver is going 65 mph, about 20 percent of fuel is lost through aerodynamic drag. The newer tractor have been designed to lower that number. There are rubber flaps which are cab extenders which reduces air flow in the gap between the cab and the trailer. The tractor also has a new style, radiators and fairings. Is the engine redone as well? These trucks all meet the 2007 EPA regulations for ultra-low emissions. They use low sulfur fuel and produce 100 percent less particulate matter then they did a decade ago. Producing 40 percent less nitrous oxide these tractors are more environmentally friendly then in the past.Which companies will be using the newer models?Kenworth, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, Caterpillar, Peterbilt, International, Volvo and Mac, Freightliner, Western Star among others. The newer tractor models were developed using a computer. We looked at the engine, exterior, interior , under hood and under body to get better airflow and to improve fuel economyTop speed depends on wind, load and grade but is about 80 mph. It gets approximately 6.5 miles per gallon and costs around $125,000.The Suns Ryan Salm conducted this weeks interview and photo session.
