Santa takes to the sky, and Truckee Tahoe style

Amy Edgett/Sierra SunSqueals of merriment from 200 excited onlookers heralded in Santa and Mrs. Clausand#8217; arrival at the Truckee Tahoe Airport Saturday, Dec. 10.

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Waves of excitement pulsed through a crowd of cheery children, elves, moms and dads who waited for Santa to arrive at the Truckee Tahoe Airport tarmac.

Reindeer I, pilot Rob Loberand#8217;s plane is Santaand#8217;s chariot for the day. and#8220;Itand#8217;s an exciting community event,and#8221; said TTA safety office Mike Barrett. and#8220;Itand#8217;s a great way for everybody to come out and experience the airport, and you donand#8217;t get to see Santa fly in in many places.and#8221;

Barrett tracks and relays Reindeer Iand#8217;s location, and relays Santaand#8217;s whereabouts to volunteers on the ground.

When Reindeer I makes a final swoop against the sunny Sierra Nevada backdrop and heads for the landing strip, cheers go up and in flies the jolly old soul. Once Lober, who is also a Flying Doctors volunteer, lands the small plane, out steps Santa and Mrs. Claus, aka Gerald and Peggy Herrick.

and#8220;Itand#8217;s truly a magical moment,and#8221; said Ruth Hall, early learning coordinator with the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. and#8220;The magic of reading and literacy is another important aspect to this event, so among the gifts to the children are books. We also had a Letter-to-Santa Writing Station this year.and#8221;

Hot chocolate, muffins, tea and coffee were among the tempting treats served. The main event sponsors were Truckee Tahoe Airport District, TTUSD, the Family Resource Center of Truckee and the Runway Cafe. Truckee Donner PUD donated their and#8220;greenand#8221; recycle bags for the childrenand#8217;s gifts.
