Shout Out to the Truckee Optimists

Teri Andrews Rinne

Two weeks ago, I featured an individual who donated money to the library to purchase books in memory of a fallen soldier. This week I showcase a local service club who answered the Truckee Library’s plea for money to help bolster our Young Adult section. Like the rest of the community, the library is no stranger to budget woes. Much of the library budget is funded by the 1/8 of a cent sales tax levied in Nevada County. With spending down dramatically countywide, our declining income translates into less staffing, fewer opening hours and even fewer books.

Truckee Optimists to the rescue! In late February, a small group consisting of library staff, a Friends of the Library representative and pre-teen/teen library users asked the Truckee Optimists to help fund one of the areas identified as a priority by the Truckee Friends of the Library Reinvigoration campaign.

Tucked away in a corner of the children’s wing is the Young Adult (YA) fiction section, with books written specifically for the middle school and high school audience. More shelving is needed to accommodate this growing section of our library, along with more book-purchasing funds to keep up with the output of this very healthy sector of the publishing world.

The Optimists were very sympathetic to our plight, with a number of them parents of children in this age group. Many had witnessed the Twilight series phenomenon that has not only rocked the YA publishing world, but has amazed parents to see their daughters who were not that interested in reading before now devouring these books. Not just daughters, but sons, too. Twilight has become the next Harry Potter.

Truckee Optimists funded the purchase of 40 new titles for the Young Adult collection as well as a new bookcase to house an estimated three years of collection growth. Right now, the newly purchased bookcase is being used, appropriately enough, to showcase the new additions to the collection, most of which were purchased with Optimist funds. All the books purchased with Optimist funds contain a gift bookplate recognizing their generous contribution to the well-being of our young readers and our community as a whole. Thank you Truckee Optimists!
