Sierra College expands services this fall: 131 courses will be offered at the Truckee Center, on cable TV, and over the Internet.

When the Fall Semester begins on Sept. 2, Sierra College will offer a total of 131 courses to residents in the Truckee region, approximately tripling the number of courses available last year. “The current budget impasse, coupled with recent budget cuts, makes this increase in educational opportunities truly remarkable,” according to Frank DeCourten, dean of the college’s Truckee center. The dramatic increase in services was made possible through the combination of an expanded curriculum at the Truckee center in the Pioneer Commerce Center, the development of two educational channels on the USA Media cable system, and an increased number of online courses originating from the Rocklin campus, but available to anyone with Internet access.

Among the new courses are several that have not been previously offered in the Truckee region, reflect contemporary issues and topics, or were designed to respond to specific needs in the community.

New offerings include courses in archaeology, geology, film studies, literature by women, and global terrorism. In addition to the new courses, the college will continue to offer a broad selection of university-transferable courses in the traditional fields of English, history, mathematics, psychology, art, and humanities.

Many of the “live” courses are scheduled at the Truckee Center during late afternoon and evening hours to accommodate students who work during the day.

In addition to the academic courses, the Sierra College Community Education office will sponsor non-credit, short-term courses in a variety of computer business applications, marketing, financial management, and ice and snow driving.

The short-term courses are offered throughout the fall at the Truckee Center, and typically meet one evening a week for two or three weeks, or on weekends.
