Sierra Senior Services earns California Wellness Foundation Grant

and#8220;The grant that almost got away,and#8221; describes relieved Executive Director Sarah Deardorff felt after receiving the best of news. The nonprofit Truckee-North Tahoe agency was awarded $200,000 for three years, primarily because it emphasizes senior health care and its goal is keeping seniors in their homes as long as possible. The agency also the only one in the area providing Meals on Wheels to homebound and disabled adults and seniors.
and#8220;The grants administrator worked with us and encouraged us to reapply after we thought our funding cycle had ended,and#8221; Deardorff explained. and#8220;They were committed to finding a way to make it work for us. We proved that we are resilient and can overcome hardships.and#8221;
The enormous amount of community support during the agencyand#8217;s struggle earlier this year made a huge impression on the foundation, according to Deardorff.
and#8220;To see as many people as we saw rally for the seniors played a key role in receiving the three-year grant,and#8221; she said.
The Cal Wellness Foundation provides core operating support for basic organizational needs such as health promotion and disease prevention activities, operating expenses and key programs such as Meals on Wheels, in addition to the Community Health Partnership (CHP).
CHP is a group of professionals who collaborate together for the benefit of seniors facing the greatest health care risks. Their focus is on communication among health care and social service providers to create a safety net for the most frail members of the community.

and#8220;Cal Wellness recognized the need we had for vehicle expenses and asked us to look into replacing our oldest vehicle. Thatand#8217;s a basic need for our agencyand#8217;s success in delivering meals and caring for the homebound,and#8221; Deardorff said.
Sierra Senior Services offers a variety of seminars on Health and Wellness enrichment, health insurance, legal issues, finances, hospice, elder abuse, medical research and more throughout the year.
