TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; SOS Outreach, a nonprofit organization, held a graduation ceremony for students from Truckee Elementary and Incline Middle school who participated in the first session of the Learn To Ride Program at Northstar Ski Resort in February. Fifteen participants have shown their dedication to learning how to ski and snowboard, as well as an understanding of SOSand#8217;s five core values: Courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom and compassion. SOS volunteers Olivia Alder and Dick Schulze, both instructors at Northstar Ski Resort, helped the youths tremendously while they learned to snowboard and also set goals around the core values.

SOS works with underserved youth in the community, giving them a chance to participate in outdoor activities while encouraging them to set goals and make healthy decisions through exploring the SOS core values. Eileen Driscoll, community liaison from Truckee Elementary School, is involved with SOS and helps recruit youth and implement the core value curriculum at school. She has spent her professional career (20 years as a chiropractor and three years in education) working with the Latino population. Her parents planted the skiing seed in her and her nine siblings growing up. Eileen believes, and#8220;The love of nature and winter sports can solve lots of stresses for kids and adults. The experience is something they carry with them. So this program combines two of my passions. Love of nature, winter outdoor activity and my passion to help underserved kids get the nature seed planted.and#8221;

On Feb. 26, 25 more youths began day one of their five-day learn to ride session at Northstar. Northstar and Vail Resorts make it possible for them to learn how to ski or snowboard.
