Tahoe Truckee community announcements

Sun staff report

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe works very hard to find homes for every adoptable homeless pet in Truckee. Over the past year, they were inundated with cats and kittens in need of homes. Unfortunately, they still have several pets from previous years who continue to wait for their forever homes. HSTT is hoping you will open your heart and help them this holiday season.

A special holiday adoption event will be held Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17, noon to 3 p.m. in the Safeway Shopping Center (next to Starbuck’s in the former Radio Shack location). Some kitties spent their holidays with HSTT last year, so their adoption fees will be waived and all cats over 5 years old will be $25. These are all sweet cats that simply need a home. They are all adoptable and lovable, they just need the right person to help them. Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is located at 10382 Donner Pass Road, Ste. 3. or visit hstt.org.

Join Read Up!, the Nevada County Adult Literacy Program, based at the Truckee Library. Tutors are dedicated community volunteers who wish to help interested students realize their potential. Tutoring is a free service of Nevada County.

The next tutor training class will be held on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at a convenient time for all new literacy tutor applicants. Tutor training manuals are provided free to new literacy tutors.

Literacy tutoring is an enjoyable and productive way to give back to the community. To become a tutor, you must read, write and speak English well, be at least 18 years of age, be available two-three hours per week, be patient and flexible and have excellent communication skills and know how to listen.

If you would like to become a Read Up! tutor, please contact Rolann Aronson, Truckee Read Up! Coordinator at 530-587-8806.
