The Great Pumpkin: Set a Halloween table and serve tempting stew
October 28, 2010
TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; You know, I was going to go anti-orange and black for this holiday tabletop (so cliche!) and describe, in detail, a classic blood and gore arrangement, but a proofreader found it unappetizing. Point taken. Not a lot of palette appeal in severed hands (use rubber glove with fake blood) and creepy branches with spider webs and little nooses. So put away the ax I was going to suggest you smack right into the middle of the table and think Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown. Thatand#8217;s right. This is a two-fer deal.
This time you will need one red square or rectangular table cloth, a round white one, some black tape and a thick black magic marker. The sizes of the tablecloths depend on the tables you are going to use. In a table top Nirvana moment, the ideal combination would be one round table (for Charlie Brownand#8217;s white head) and one rectangle or square table for his red shirt. (You see the direction we are going here.) But if you have only a rectangular table then place the white cloth down first and then partially cover with the red, leaving about one-third of the table showing white. Start with Charlie Brownand#8217;s and#8220;shirt,and#8221; or the red table cloth, and use your black tape to do the signature zig-zag across the width or and#8220;frontand#8221; of the table. Then, referencing a picture of Charlie Brown and#8212; this is crucial, trust me, or your face may come out looking like the neighborand#8217;s baby and#8212; take your thick black Sharpie and draw his features on the white plastic tablecloth.
To further drive this Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin theme home, put bowls of black licorice or chunky chocolate pieces in a plastic pumpkin bowl with a little sign that says and#8220;I got a rock.and#8221;
If you are still nervous about your neighbor thinking you are making fun of her big headed baby (that must have hurt!) serve the following and all will be forgiven.
3 cloves garlic quartered
3 Tbl. cooking oil
