‘The Islands’ at Truckee High get facelift through community collaboration
October 4, 2010
TRUCKEE, Calif. – On Friday Sept. 10, students from Truckee High Schools’ woodshop and special day class assembled gifts from the Career Bound Foundation, CEO Duane Andrews. The magnitude of this generous donation is quite visible: it involved a complete make over of the 10 modular classrooms, known as the “Islands,” at Truckee High School.
Two all-weather picnic-style tables and five large planter boxes were assembled and strategically placed in the Islands area. The architectural firm of Ryan Group designed a colorful palette to compliment these modulars and donated a portion of their fee also.
On Sept. 23, Eric Larusson of Village Nursery (who also discounted his plant materials) arrived to give direction to the special day class students, who participated in the planting process.
This type of “face-lift” is particularly appreciated in these lean financial times and represents a good example of a citizen displaying their civic responsibility. All areas of Truckee High can now truly feel a sense of pride.
On Sept. 28th, with the THS band providing music, a grand opening celebration was held in the Islands. Duane and Becky Andrews cut a big banner stating “We Love the Islands!” An island-style reception followed with representatives from the district office and other staff and students present.
In honor of the Andrew’s generous donation, one of the un-named modulars (each modular is named after a different island) was dubbed St. Andrews.
