Deet or Chanel No. 5 ” it’s so hard to choose your perfume of choice during Tahoe’s busy summer social season.

Whether the events are fundraisers like Win for Charity, Lake Tahoe Music Festival or the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival performances, volunteering on the Donner Lake Rim Trail, visiting Family Day at the Tahoe Maritime Museum, or just parties with friends and neighbors, all the events celebrate being outdoors here in Tahoe.

Celebrating life in our region is what Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation does year round. We brave the mosquitoes of spring, the bees of late summer and the elements of winter to talk with people passionate about Tahoe.

And boy, are people passionate about Tahoe.

When I’m at these events, many people want to talk philanthropy with me. Of course, they have no idea that’s what they’re talking about. They think they’re talking about traffic back-ups in Tahoe City, the problem of businesses that can’t find summer help or their fears of wildfire.

To me, it all sounds like philanthropy. I acquired that selective hearing problem in Dallas when I first began working in nonprofit organizations. People who raise money never hear the word “no.”

TTCF is the region’s permanent endowment serving the entire community ” not just one cause, one program or one organization. We mobilize people’s passion for Tahoe and bring resources to solve our region’s toughest challenges and embrace its most inspiring opportunities.

And the passion is spreading. Earlier this week I received an e-mail from a man in Nigeria who has $21.5 million to share. I’m sure it’s his passion for North Tahoe that motivated him to send that email.

When I come up smelling like Deet and say, “Let’s talk philanthropy” you can relax because, when we’re talking philanthropy, I’m not asking you for money. Just as your attorney provides legal advice, and your accountant provides financial advice, TTCF is your philanthropic advisor and provides you with advice on charitable giving.

Still, I have high expectations. I think everyone can and should be a philanthropist committed to building a better Truckee-North Tahoe.

So, let’s talk philanthropy. TTCF helps you make good decisions on your philanthropy and to consider where your dollars can best go to solve problems or support all that’s beautiful and good in our region.

Now, if I can just get a response from that Nigerian man who has $21.5 million. I wonder if I can send a scented e-mail?
