There’s no ifs about this flying pig
April 29, 2008
If the high winds we’ve been buffeted by lately persist, that old adage, “If pigs could fly” just might come true.
Actually, allow me to rephrase that: A pig is flying somewhere in California airspace ” a giant pig, at that. And with these winds blowing in, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that soaring swine clear the Sierra Crest real soon.
If you’re reading this thinking the newsroom coffee pot was dosed like the punch bowl at a Grateful Dead acid test, here’s my two-word explanation: Pink Floyd.
Well, more exactly, Roger Waters, a key mastermind behind most of Floyd’s music. And if you’ve ever had the chance to check out the spectacle that is Pink Floyd live, you know Waters is also the mastermind behind the band’s elaborate visual feasts ” giant inflatable pigs and all.
Seems Waters headlined the Coachella music festival down in Indio, Calif. on Sunday. As tall as a two-story house and as wide as two school buses, Roger’s pig was led from lines held on the ground as he played a version of Pink Floyd’s “Pigs” from the 1977 anti-capitalist album “Animals.”
Then that big porker just floated away, according to the Associated Press.

Waters, the genius behind The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, told the crowd “that’s my pig” as it drifted off into the night.
Pink Floyd shows have used blowup pigs throughout the years. The wayward oinker is “the same prototype” as past pigs, according to Coachella spokeswoman Marcee Rondan. The festival is offering a $10,000 reward plus four Coachella tickets for life for the safe return of Roger’s pig.
“It wasn’t really supposed to happen that way. I don’t have the details,” Rondan told the AP about the escape. “People are putting search teams together to find this pig.”
Now if a giant, blow-up pig floats into your backyard and you want to make sure it is, in fact, the pig with the $10,000 bounty, here’s what to look for. The swine displays the words, “Don’t be led to the slaughter” and a cartoon of Uncle Sam holding two bloody cleavers. The other side reads, “Fear builds walls” and the underside reads “Obama” with a checked ballot box.
