Totally Tropically Truckee: The Encore
December 4, 2012
TRUCKEE, Calif. – In Truckee, we are well known for our delightful long and snowy winters. Last year we selected the theme “Snowy Days and Books Go Together” for our annual Winter Reading Program. After a banner 2010-2011 snow season that lasted through the Fourth of July, it seemed like the perfect theme, especially with that early October surprise followed by a seasonable pre-Thanksgiving blanket of snow. We seemed to be on track for yet another great winter. Then our program started the first week in December and ended with Ski/Skate week, with nary a snowflake to be seen. Did we jinx the weather, or what? At that point, I promised to dust off our grass skirt-clad snowperson and recycle the Totally Tropically Truckee theme first enjoyed 10 years ago. Most of the participants from the first program are either applying for college, or already there.-
When children, ages 5-12, come in to the library to sign up for Totally Tropical Truckee, they will be given a reading record and a lei. Rather than dictate a pre-set reading goal, each child will be given the opportunity to set their own goal for how many books they will read over the three-month period. In keeping with our alliterative theme, the only stipulation is that the reading goal start with a ‘t’ and be greater than two. So it could be three, 10, 13, 20-something, 30-something, or even 200 books!
Upon completion of their personal goal, participants will select a totally tropical prize from the Truckee treasure chest, a book of their choosing, and best of all, an invitation to an after-hours luau at the library.
So stop by the library soon to sign your child up for the Totally Tropical Truckee Winter Reading Program and to check out our cool mascot: a snowperson clad in a grass-skirt and coconut bra. Let’s hope our reverse psychology works!
