Open up that change jar, Trick-or-Treaters from Glenshire Elementary will be collecting coins with their candy this year to aid worldwide programs funded by UNICEF.

Last year Glenshire students raised $1,589 in change on Halloween night, contributing to a national total of more than $132 million since the program was founded 50 years ago.

“The students get so excited about it, and they even bring their own piggy-bank money.” said Glenshire principal Kathleen Gauthier. “It’s such a good bang for your buck ” it’s amazing how far UNICEF can make a couple pennies go.”

Inspired by reports of children suffering in Europe as a result of World War II, Philadelphia school children went door-to-door on Halloween night, 1950, to collect money for their peers overseas. The students donated their $17 in collections to UNICEF, which was on the ground in war-torn Europe providing assistance to children and their families.
