Truckee Library: Chill Out and Read! recap

Teri Andrews Rinne
Truckee Childrenand#8217;s Services Librarian

Each winter the Truckee Library hosts a Winter Reading Program, a low-key corollary to our more splashy Summer Reading Program. From December through February, independent readers, ages 5-12, are encouraged to come to the library to sign up for the program.

They receive a theme-related reading record and stickers to keep track of their reading and a bookmark to help keep their places in the many books they agree to read.

Participants are asked to set a personal reading goal of either 5 or 10 books. This year the number of books read ranged from 5 to 40. All told, 21 children completed the program, reading a total of nearly 200 books! Hearty congratulations to Jasmine Harris, Steffan Cuneo, Annaliese Cuneo, Ryann Mond, Aaron Bronstone, Grace Bronstone, Jacob Wright, Miko Wright, Clayton Lind, Spencer Lind, Alyse Harper, Eden Harper, Dawson Smith, Daniel Turn, Derek Turn, Alyssa Turn, Ayden Luther, Gabriella Horvath, Juliana Horvath, Ian Smith and Caitlyn Smith!

Each finisher earned a free book of their choosing, a book bag, a certificate of completion, and an invitation to an after-hours library party to celebration their accomplishments.-

Thirteen of our finishers attended the after-hours library party. These regular library users are treated to an extra-special treat, being able to and#8220;breakand#8221; all the rules after the library closes its doors for the week; they got to eat and drink in the library and were encouraged to be loud and boisterous. We enjoyed yummy pizza, a discussion of favorite books, a rousing game of Twister, and a showing of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, complete with kettle corn accompaniment. What a fabulous group of kids to hang out with on a Friday night!

peaking of fabulous groups of kids, a big thank you goes out to Mikaela Prestowitz and friends. In honor of Mikaelaand#8217;s 9th birthday, her friends donated gently used books to the library as well as $60 to buy new books! I know that itand#8217;s not easy to forego birthday presents when you are 9 (or any age, for that matter), so itand#8217;s an extra special gesture of support for our library. Thank you, Mikaela and friends!-
