Truckee woman to run three marathons in three days
August 14, 2003
Running a marathon is one thing, but running three marathons in three days has to be three times as hard – at least.
Truckee-resident Gretchen Brugman will try to master the feat of running 78.6 miles in the Tahoe Triple on Oct. 9-11.
But until then, it’s training, training, training.
“I always said I was going to run an ultra marathon before I turned 30,” she said. “I’m 29 right now.”
Brugman has six marathons under her belt – her favorite was Grandma’s Marathon along the shores of Lake Superior – and has been an endurance athlete since junior high.
Part of Brugman’s training has been to run the Tahoe Rim Trail 50K (about 31.5 miles). She entered the race, she said, to motivate herself to train more for the Tahoe Triple.

“I’m sort of in a weird phase of recovery from the 50K. It took a lot out of me,” she said. “It makes me nervous (for the Tahoe Triple), but I’ve already put in so much training; I’m not too worried.”
To date, Brugman and 56 runners from all over the world have paid the $190 entry fee to try and tackle the three-day stage marathon, which wraps around Lake Tahoe once with eight miles of overlap to add up to 26.2 miles per day.
The Web site for the Lake Tahoe Marathon boasts that the Tahoe Triple is “excellent speed work for your next 100-miler.”
For the first two days of the Tahoe Triple, the runners will have a roaming aid station following them with energy drinks and water. Burgman said her husband and some friends will follow her along the route with food and drink to keep her energy high. On the final day, Oct. 11, Triplers will meet at the starting line of the Lake Tahoe Marathon in Commons Beach in Tahoe City.
“It’s key to be really conservative in the beginning,” she said. “I have to focus on not getting too excited and remain relaxed.”
