Twin Ridges welcomes new director

TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; Twin Ridges Home Study Charter School welcomes new Director Jaynie Aydin to their personalized learning team. Aydin is a native Californian and graduate of an independent study high school program. She received her bachelorand#8217;s degree in anthropology from California State University, Northridge and masterand#8217;s in the interdisciplinary field of World Arts and Cultures at University of California, Los Angeles.
Aydin conducted extensive field research within the Americas, Polynesia, South Eastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean where she focused on ethnography and global studies. and#8220;An alternative approach to learning is something that I have always advocated at every level of study,and#8221; Aydin said. and#8220;I truly believe students are never too young to be active participants in their own education.and#8221;
Elementary education is not new to Aydin. She served as an assistant educational coordinator for the UCLA ArtsBridge program, training student teachers how to integrate the arts into standardized K-12 curricula. She said, and#8220;Teaching core subjects by combining art with science, music with math and history with storytelling, for example, gives students the chance to explore their strengths, creativity and innovative approaches to problem solving.and#8221;
In addition to her work with children, Aydin has taught social studies and video production courses at community colleges and universities such as UCLA, Santa Monica College and Yasar University in Izmir, Turkey. She has lectured internationally, led field trips for Smithsonian Journeys tours and assisted in the production of three documentary films on the topics of dance, music and transnationalism. Aydin says, and#8220;My roots as an independent high school student definitely provided me with a solid learning foundation and nurtured my curiosity about the world. It is a foundation I am eager to continue building together with our Truckee students, parents and extraordinary teachers.and#8221;
Aydin says the shift to overseeing the programs at the Twin Ridges Home Study Charter School is an exciting one. and#8220;The environment at Twin Ridges reminds me of a genuine village institute, supported by local networks of parents, teachers, staff, students as well as community scholars and artists. I embrace the chance to work with the Truckee youth and their families who are committed to innovating balanced education traditions and#8212; with a unique Sierra style!and#8221;
Aydinand#8217;s goals for the future include sponsoring peer centered social activities such as pioneering field trips and site-specific group projects. and#8220;We also plan to host more visiting guest scholars and artists from around the world. This way we can offer our students exposure to a variety of different global perspectives,and#8221; she said.
