Volunteer Corner: Jan Chamberlain

Ryan Salm/Sierra SunJan Chamberlain

To which organization do you give your volunteer time? I volunteer with the Sierra Senior Services. I deliver Meals on Wheels every week. How long have you been with the organization?Ive been doing it for five years. I did three years at South Lake Tahoe and Ive been over here for two years. How do you spend your volunteer time?I usually deliver eight meals, give or take. Why do you volunteer?I volunteer because of the rewards that I receive back. What I receive back is a warm feeling in my heart and the gratitude of the people that I touch each week. Why do you think this organization is important to have?I think its important because this area is very difficult for the seniors. There are so many elements that make everyday life difficult and especially to the people that are homebound, and it is great that they have nutritious, healthy meals. Its good to have somebody to peek in on them and keep an eye on them. What is your favorite memory of volunteering?I would say probably my weekly chuckle from one of my clients. He has a chuckle every week. He always has a joke, every week he has something funny to say, he puts a smile on my face. Also, the overall gratitude I get. The people are so grateful. How long have you lived in the area?I live in Tahoe Pines. Ive been in the Tahoe Basin for 20 years. What is your favorite thing to do in Tahoe?Just enjoy the lake and sunshine. I love hiking. Theres too many things to say. Just overall the lifestyle I have here. If you could go anywhere in the world right now where would you go?Nowhere. I dont like to leave Tahoe in the summer at all. Summertime, this is it. No place better. The Suns Kelly Ruane interviewed Chamberlain for Volunteer Corner.
