Volunteer for good at Tahoe Women’s Services

Keely Hedderman

The Tahoe Women’s Services volunteer programs offer a variety of opportunities to serve the community. Our organization is committed to reducing the incidence and trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. We empower survivors to move through crisis to self-sufficiency by providing reliable, consistent and progressive services. To do this successfully, Tahoe Women’s Services relies on their large volunteer corps, who works in a number of different programs requiring varying degrees of time commitment. There is usually a project that can fit into everyone’s busy schedule and if there isn’t a fit, some people tailor their volunteering to their individual schedules. To become proficient, all of our volunteers who work directly with clients must complete our Crisis Intervention Training. The next training begins on Sept. 8. The training is an intensive 63-hour course being held on a combination of Tuesday evenings, Thursdays evenings and three Saturdays over eight weeks. The training includes information on active listening, peer counseling, advocacy and educates volunteers on topics such as crisis intervention, domestic violence sexual assault, suicide, depression, child abuse and other related issues. The trainees will be expected to attend all the sessions. Training is open to men and women over 18. Males and bilingual applicants are encouraged.Graduates from this course are certified by the State of California Office of Emergency Services in Crisis Intervention and Peer Counseling and are eligible to work in any of the Tahoe Women’s Services client based programs. These programs include the 24-Hour Community Help line, the Children’s Program, the Legal Advocacy Program and the Safe House Buddy Program. For more information on the various programs, call Keely Hedderman, volunteer coordinator, and tell her what you are interested in and maybe there is something you can do.
