TRUCKEE, Calif. — With summer upon us in the Sierra, California 89, the Truckee-based clothing and lifestyle brand, is hosting an outdoor Adventure Film Series.

The first showing is Saturday, June 20, running through Sept 12, with films every Saturday night (and Fridays on July 3 and Aug. 21.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with film showings at sundown outside at the store’s Truckee location at 10156 Donner Pass Road.

From skiing down the tallest peaks in the Himalaya to kayaking across the Aleutian Islands, these films inspire you to chase our dreams.

Saturday’s film is “Above the Alley, Beneath the Sky.” It follows climbing instructor Andrew Lenz in his quest to build a youth outreach climbing program in Brazil’s largest slum in Rio de Janeiro.

The film “sprung out of the concept that some of the world’s finest rock climbing was literally on the backdoor step of this under-served community,” according to the Above the Alley website. “Every Monday, the kids venture out onto the cliffs above their favela. During the climb, they are able to stare down upon a community famous for drugs and gang activity.”

Tickets for all Adventure Film Series showings are $5, with proceeds going to support nonprofits such as the Truckee Trails Foundation and the Custom Learning Academy of Truckee.

Beer and grilled sausages and brats will be served for a price. Seating is limited, and heat lamps are included.

Visit california89.com/events/adventure-films for information, including a full lineup of films scheduled for this summer.

Also at the Truckee business, the CA89 Run, Bike, and Tri Clubs are looking for more people to join.

“Whether you’re after motivation to move or just want some more active friends to hang with, this is the place,” said California 89 Manager Jason Spruit.

CA89 ambassadors Karen Brunings, Seva Fridman, and Christie Jackson will lead weekly mountain/road bikes and swims.

All levels are welcome, Spruit said. Visit california89.com to learn more about the clubs and other offerings.
