TAHOE, Calif. — Tahoe League for Charity held its annual Pinecone Derby on the Truckee River on Sept. 9. Pinecones were tied with biodegradable string markers and sent on their way from bridge to bridge in a grand flotilla, to be scooped up with nets at the finish line. This year’s winners were Ray Holstead in first place, Ellen Magnani in second place; and Dick Morton in third place.

This fundraising event raises monies for local student scholarships and to support local nonprofit organizations.

Following the race, participants headed to River Ranch Lodge & Restaurant for a no-host meal. For more information on TLC, its monthly Lunch and Speaker series, and the Pinecone Derby contact Joanne Domingue at

Next month’s TLC event will be at Northstar on Oct. 14, with lunch at the Ritz-Carlton’s Manzanita restaurant followed by an architectural tour of the hotel. This event is open to TLC members and their guests. Check them out at
