Pinewood Derby winners for Cub Scout pack 734

Left to right: 1st place Jacob Villaman, 2nd place Nicholas Villaman, and 3rd place Ian Campbell

On Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 69 Cub Scouts from pack 734 took part in the annual Pinewood Derby in the Glenshire Elementary gym. The 1st through 5th grade students raced hand-made pinewood derby cars down a six-lane track, with each car racing six times.

Winners were computed by calculating the average times for each car’s six runs, with the lowest average times going to winners:

1st place: Jacob Villaman (third grader – homeschooled; also 1st place winner in 2008)

2nd place: Nicholas Villaman (first grader – homeschooled; also Jacob’s younger brother)

3rd place: Ian Campbell (fifth grader – Glenshire Elementary)

These three scouts worked many hours over many weeks to perfect their cars (wheels, axels, and overall designs), created from a standard cub scout car model kit.

Jacob and Nicholas worked with their grandfather, Rich Hinkel, and Ian worked with his dad, Neil Campbell.

Congratulations to all the Cub Scouts who participated and built some stylish race cars.
