A pipe bomb discovered at Truckee fire station 93 at Donner Lake closed a portion of Donner Pass Road and part of Donner Lake for four and a half hours Saturday.

Truckee police, Placer County Sheriff’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team, Truckee Fire Protection District, and California Highway Patrol responded to a report of the device at the front door of the fire station near the west end of Donner Lake at about 11 a.m.

“The fire captain who lives there found a suspicious looking device and called the Truckee Police Department,” said Truckee police Lt. Randy Fenn.

The first responding officer identified it as a pipe bomb-type improvised explosive device, according to Truckee police reports.

Placer County’s bomb squad arrived on scene at about 11:30 a.m.

“The Placer County Sheriff’s [Explosive Ordinance Disposal] team moved the device at about 3 p.m. with their robot to where they could render it safe,” Fenn said.

The fire department cleared the station and were on scene for potential medical response and had an engine on scene in case of a fire, said Gene Welch, Truckee fire information officer.

Fenn said investigation into the bomb is ongoing.

“We have no suspects at this time, we will continue to follow up, but there are no motives that we know of,” Fenn said.
