Placer agrees to fund Martis Valley conservation

Sun staff reports

The Placer County Board of Supervisors agreed to work with two land trusts to preserve more than 500 acres of Martis Valley land from widespread residential development.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and the Trust for Public Land are attempting to purchase Waddle Ranch from Hyatt hotel chain owners, the Pritzker family. The property’s 598 acres in Placer County are zoned to hold nearly 1,000 new homes.

The property also extends into Nevada County.

Placer County is considering spending $10 million gathered through open space fees imposed on other Martis Valley developments, to help bankroll the purchase.

Although the details of that amount have not been approved by Placer County, the intention to fund the purchase was approved unanimously with no discussion by the board.

Waddle Ranch and 7,000 acres belonging to Sierra Pacific Industries make up the majority of private land on the eastern side of Highway 267 ” an area environmental groups have targeted for conservation.
