Placer County to put off vote on transportation tax

AUBURN, Calif. (AP) ” Placer County officials are postponing a ballot initiative that would have asked voters to approve a half-cent sales tax increase for transportation improvements.

Polls commissioned by the county indicate that voter support has dropped to around 58 percent, which is short of the two-thirds majority required for approval.

Rocklin City Councilwoman Kathy Lund says despite years of discussion on the issue, fewer than one in five voters was even aware of the measure.

The tax increase was projected to raise more than $1 billion over 30 years for road expansion, maintenance and transit.

Lund says the county will have to do more outreach before taking the idea to voters ” possibly in 2010.
