Placer County to talk housing

Placer County is tackling its state-mandated plan for future housing, but will leave out affordable housing ordinances that have been proposed but never acted upon.

The county will hold a public meeting at 3:30 p.m. today in Kings Beach on the housing plan.

During the county’s last “housing element” ” a five-year plan that requires towns and counties to show they have zoned land and removed obstacles to providing housing for each income level ” Placer County proposed two ordinances to boost employee housing and affordable homes in new subdivisions.

But those ordinances stalled.

“We’ll have to report back to the state on what happened with our affordable-housing ordinances,” said Ann Baker, the principal Placer County planner for the document.

Instead, the housing document will move forward with the typical requirement ” the county showing it has zoned land for housing all income types and provided programs to help get affordable housing on the ground.

Typically, the low-income housing requirements are the hardest to achieve, said Baker.

The county’s housing element must be certified by the state by June 2008.

The public workshop on the plan will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. today at the North Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach.
