Plane has rough landing at Truckee airport
A twin-engine plane skidded partway off the runway at Truckee Tahoe Airport on Thursday after one of its wheels apparently collapsed as the aircraft landed.
Neither of the two people in the plane were hurt, but the plane was damaged in the landing. The airport closed both of its runways briefly. The shorter runway remained closed for a longer period of time as they removed the damaged plan Thursday afternoon.
Truckee Fire Protection District officials and Nevada County sheriff’s officers were on the scene quickly after the plane landed.
Perry Kagan, a pilot from San Diego who was waiting to take off at the time, said he saw the plane approach and skid across the tarmac.
“Just when he landed, I guess the gear collapsed and he started skidding,” Kagan said.
The airport did not say where the pilots were from or where they were flying.
“What we know is the plane came to a stop on two of its three wheels,” said Kevin Bumen, airport noise and business operations technician .
Bumen said the unsettled weather did not appear to have anything to do with the irregular landing. Airport officials contacted the National Transportation Safety Board and got clearance to remove the aircraft from the runway.
