Planning commission to discuss downtown office space tonight

At tonight’s Truckee Planning Commission meeting, staff will discuss possibly limiting ground floor office use in the downtown core commercial area.

“The topic is the balance of office uses in the downtown,” said Town Planner Duane Hall, who will be giving an informational presentation at the meeting. “The whole purpose is to see if there is a need to discuss the topic further, or if it is something that be incorporated into the downtown plan.”

The issue of downtown office space was brought to the commission’s attention in late January when Truckee Downtown Merchants Association President Stefanie Olivieri spoke at a planning meeting.

“We at the (Merchants) Association have discussed our concern with the fact that so many offices have replaced retail space on the main street,” Olivieri told the Sierra Sun last month. “It is always a concern in a commercial area when that happens because it erodes that retail area.”

In December the Nevada City Planning Commission approved an ordinance prohibiting any new ground-floor real estate offices from opening on the main street of their historic downtown. Some members of the Truckee commission have been keeping an eye on the impact, but Hall said it is too soon to tell whether it was a smart move for Nevada City.
