Propane explosion damages home on Tahoe’s West Shore

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; The propane leaks that have been plaguing the Serene Lakes neighborhood near Donner Summit have also been prevalent on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, although not to the same degree of frequency, officials reported Monday.

However, a propane explosion did occur at about 1 p.m. Saturday in Ward Canyon, leading to extensive damage to an unoccupied home at 4061 Gstaad Road, according to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District.

No injuries were reported, said Dave Zaski, spokesman for NTFPD. The blast was loud enough to be heard throughout the neighborhood; no other structures received damage. The incident is under investigation.

Since early April, 25 propane gas leaks have been confirmed in the Serene Lakes neighborhood in Soda Springs, spurring Placer County Chief Executive Tom Miller to declare a Proclamation of Local Emergency for the area.

The leaks have been reportedly caused by the extraordinary snowfall this winter breaking pipes and tanks buried under dozens of feet of snow.

Last week, Rui Cunha, Placer Countyand#8217;s Emergency Services Program Manager, said the quickening snow melt is making the loads heavier.
