Propane leak shuts down Highway 89 between Tahoe City, Alpine

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; A propane leak has closed part of Highway 89 between the and#8220;Wyeand#8221; in Tahoe City and River Ranch near Alpine Meadows to through traffic, according to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District.

Dave Zaski, public information officer for the district, said the road closure should last about 2 hours. The 500-gallon propane leak has also led to the evacuation of one commercial building, he said. Multiple emergency responders including a hazmat team from the Truckee Fire Protection District are on scene to mitigate the leak.

No injuries or explosions have been reported, Zaski said; the highway will reopen when conditions are deemed safe.
