Quality performer: Katy Stephens is Sierra Sun’s female athlete of year at Truckee High
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; As usual, there was no shortage of outstanding senior athletes at Truckee High in 2009-2010.
For her athletic achievements this past school year, Katy Stephens is the female Athlete of the Year.
Hereand#8217;s a closer look at why:
It was best to be on the same side as Stephens and#8212; a scrappy fullback on the Wolverinesand#8217; three-time state champion soccer team and guard on the Truckee basketball team who could get under the skin of the most skilled and even-tempered opponents.
and#8220;Katy Stephens is a great defensive player,and#8221; said Angelo Tenorio, Stephensand#8217; varsity basketball coach the past three seasons. and#8220;She works extremely hard. Sheand#8217;s just a great person all-around. She loves the game, and sheand#8217;s very sociable. And she brings a lot of heart and passion to the game. Sheand#8217;s just like that in general and#8212; just an all-around great kid.
and#8220;She was a joy to have for the last three years on the varsity team.and#8221;
Stephens was equally pestering as a lockdown defender on the soccer field and the basketball court, on which she also had the ability to heat up offensively from behind the 3-point arc. In soccer she was voted to the All-State and All-League first team at fullback, while in basketball she was voted to the All-State and All-League second team at the guard position.
And sheand#8217;s not done yet, as Stephens has committed to joining the basketball team next season at Monterey Peninsula College.
and#8220;Iand#8217;m excited for her to go to college and play,and#8221; Tenorio said. and#8220;Hopefully sheand#8217;ll have a good experience at the junior college level.and#8221;
