Rain does not halt fire danger

This week’s thunderstorm did not bring fire season to an early end, and normal weather patterns are expected to return through the week, fire officials said.

“The precipitation will be short-lived, and things are still dry,” said Gene Welch, spokesman for the Truckee Fire Protection District.

Welch said fire season usually extends into late October.

“The fire danger doesn’t reduce until we have significant rainfall,” Welch said.

The fire department has responded to several chimney fires in the last week. Homeowners should clear pine needles off of roofs and check chimneys for cleaning, said Welch.

A spokesman at the Grass Valley Interagency Emergency Command Center this morning said lightning strikes caused two small fires in the Forest Hill area and another near Truckee.

Crews were responding to the Forest Hill fires and there was little other information available. The Truckee fire was small and put out almost immediately.

Lightning strike activity has been normal for the year, said Welch.

The spokesman said fire danger still exists despite the heavy rains. The storm, “was just an isolated event,” according to Harry Stockman at the Qwikcast.com weather service.
