Rain makes for messy conditions on interstate

Two big rigs jackknifed in nearly the same location on Interstate 80 during Wednesday morning’s rainy conditions.

The first truck crashed while headed eastbound, east of Hirschdale, stalling traffic headed in the same direction at approximately 8:30 a.m. Gallons of diesel leaked from its fuel tank, and the rain carried the fuel under the concrete median and into the westbound lanes, said CHP information officer Kirk Bromell.

A second big rig, headed westbound, hit the slick patch where the diesel had leaked and also jackknifed, he said.

“With the water and diesel fuel mix, it was slicker than ice out there,” Bromell said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accidents, but the interstate was closed in both directions for an hour while Caltrans mopped up the diesel spill, Bromell said.

In another accident Thursday morning, an eastbound big rig hit the center divider and then came to rest in the right hand lane near Boca on Interstate 80 at 7:30 a.m., according to CHP reports.

The big rig leaked diesel onto the roadway, and CHP held traffic while Caltrans cleaned up the fuel. One lane was re-opened after 20 minutes.

One caller informed the CHP that other vehicles were sliding on the fuel that had spilled on the roadway.
