Record high temperatures set to cool

The weekend was a scorcher ” at least by May standards.

Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday set new record highs for Truckee and North Tahoe. But a cooling trend is forecast to start today, with highs of 75 on Tuesday and 55 on Wednesday, and there’s even a chance of showers or thunderstorms this week.

On Saturday, Truckee’s high temperature was 89, beating the previous record high for that date of 85. Tahoe City registered at 77, beating the previous record of 75.

Sunday’s temperatures also broke records in both Truckee and Tahoe City, where weather records have been kept since 1914 and 1948 respectively.

A hot spell in May is unusual, but it isn’t unheard of, said Kyle Mozley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

“It doesn’t happen often, but it can happen,” said Mozley, who noted 1954, 1973 and 2006 also had warm weather in May.

And it’s too soon to say if this weekend’s weather portends a sweltering summer, he said.

“That depends on what happens globally,” Mozley said, explaining that we are emerging from a La Nina weather pattern and heading into “neutral conditions.”

The area will see cooler and windier conditions through the week. A wind advisory is posted for Truckee and North Tahoe as a cold front from the Gulf of Alaska will arrive by Wednesday.
