Red Cross seeks local volunteers

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to serve on a local disaster team that would respond to emergencies such as wildfires.

The relief organization has never had a local Disaster Action Team, but has decided to train a group of up to 30 local residents for the task.

“It could be an avalanche. It could be a wildfire ” wherever you have displaced people,” said Lynn Felsch, a local American Red Cross volunteer. Felsch and Phred Stoner will serve as team leaders in the area, she said.

Last winter the American Red Cross stepped in to provide shelter for motorists trapped on Interstate 80 during snowstorms that closed the highway.

The emergency came after the Red Cross had recently stationed a trailer with shelter necessities at the Truckee Tahoe Airport, said Felsch.

Classes for the disaster team will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Truckee Tahoe Airport board room. The same class will be held on June 9 in Auburn, and other dates are available in Auburn and Sacramento for interested volunteers who miss the Truckee class.

Prospective volunteers can e-mail Lynn Felsch for further details at or lynnfelsch@gmailcom.
