Regional chambers of commerce bow out of Nevada Co. marketing role
NEVADA CITY, Calif. and#8212; The Regional Chambers of Commerce will not pursue the latest tourism-related contract issued by Nevada County, it announced on Tuesday.
and#8220;The Regional Chambers of Commerce have functioned as the tourism marketing arm for Nevada County since 1994,and#8221; said President of the Chambers Susan George. and#8220;With limited financial and human resources, we believe it is in the best interest of our Chamber members that we focus our attention and time on our members and our communities at this point in time.and#8221;
The Chambersand#8217; announcement comes about one month after the Nevada County Board of Supervisors altered the way it approached awarding contracts for tourism-related projects.
Instead of dividing the approximately $125,000 available for tourism-related projects into several different contracts, the board approved a decision to solicit proposals from organizations as to how they would use the entire sum to enhance tourism in Nevada County.
The previous year the board divided the sum into at least four different contracts and#8212; with authorized spending $40,000 with the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, $10,000 to the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce and $20,000 to Shannon Pelline, owner of Sierra Food Wine and Art magazine, along with a $50,000 contract with the regional chambers and#8212; a move that was widely criticized at the time.
After the countyand#8217;s decision at the April 10 supervisors’ meeting, George praised the change, saying the new format would foster greater collaboration.
On Tuesday, however, George said the Chambers would not be a part of that collaboration.
and#8220;We have listened and responded to the Supervisorsand#8217; direction over the years,and#8221; George said. and#8220;We believe we have taken proactive steps to broaden the collaboration in our efforts and have raised the bar in our reporting and transparency.
and#8220;We wish only the best to the next group that takes the reins to focus on the tourism industry in order to improve the overall competitiveness of the destination.and#8221;
The Regional Chambers of Commerce is a volunteer, nonprofit organization composed of the chambers of commerce of Grass Valley/Nevada County, Nevada City, Truckee, Penn Valley, South County and Rough and Ready.
