Reids have their day at Alpenglow Freestyle race

Emma Garrard/Sierra SunRick Reynolds double-poles out of the start of the Alpenglow 20-kilometer freestyle race at Tahoe Cross Country Sunday. Reynolds placed second overall with a time fo 54:19. One hundred and forty-three people competed in 20-kilometer and 5-kilometer race.

If the Reid clan raced as a group, they’d be the team to beat in many Nordic events.

Racing individually Sunday in the Alpenglow Freestyle at Tahoe Cross Country, three members of the Palo Alto family proved why.

Garrett Reid outdistanced the field to take the top spot overall, edging Rick Reynolds with a time of 53:29 over the 20-kilometer course. Reynolds (54:19) was followed by Martin Benes in third (54:48), August Brautigam in fourth (55:11) and Steve Axt in fifth (55:25). Russell Kennedy, a sophomore at Truckee High School, captured the sixth spot overall in 55:33.

Beth Reid breezed through the women’s competition, placing ninth overall and first among female racers with a time of 56:20. Cathy Howard was second in the women’s field, crossing the finish in 1:03.18, while Debbie Hakansson placed third in 1:03.32.

Competing in the 5-kilometer race, Joanne Reid won the overall with a time of 19:48, giving her family three wins on the day. She was trailed by Carson Lindsay (20:15), Alex Hamilton (20:19), Jordan McElroy (20:24), Annika Taylor (20:41), Sophie Aaron (21:17) and Austin Meng (21:20).
