Tourists and locals planning to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday may find a new airport shuttle service to Reno a big help.

Daily service by the North Lake Tahoe Express will start Nov. 15, just in time for winter.

The 21-passenger vehicle connects the Reno-Tahoe International Airport with the North Tahoe and Truckee area via three routes, including the communities from Homewood to Incline Village on the North Shore, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, and Northstar up to Truckee.

Direct doorstep service is not available at this time. The stops are being finalized and will be at major lodging properties along the three routes.

“When we launch, [we’re] looking to everyone to help support the service,” said Steve Teshara, the executive director of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. “[The shuttle] is a huge benefit to local residents as well as with tourism.”

The Express will run daily from 3:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. and cost $60 per person for a round-trip service. Discounts will be available for groups of three or more, and reservations are required.

With owning and operation costs averaged at 52.2 cents per mile, according to AAA, the 40-mile drive from Truckee to the airport would cost $20. And with airport parking rates ranging from $8 to $20 per day, depending on location, a three-day weekend could cost upwards of $80.

The Web site, http://www.northlaketahoeexpress.com, is still under works, said Jan Collier, the executive director of Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, but should be up and running by the beginning of October.
