Reno teen admits assault at deadly party

RENO (AP) ” A Reno teenager has pleaded guilty to assault charges related to a confrontation at a Halloween party where a Truckee snowboarder was slain.

Nineteen-year-old Saili Manu faces sentencing ranging from probation to up to six years in prison on each count of assault when sentenced later this year.

Charles Coogan Kelly, 21, of Truckee, was one of three people shot to death at the off-campus party that was attended by University of Nevada football players.

Samisone Taukitoku, also 19, who crashed the college party with Manu, is accused of three counts of murder with the use of a firearm and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Authorities say the shootings erupted after an altercation on a crowded dance floor. Manu’s lawyer said Manu took a loaded pistol to the Oct. 28 party and pointed it at people after fights broke out, but didn’t shoot anyone.

Kelly was a native of the Sierra Valley who had hoped to establish himself as a professional snowboarder this winter. Several snowboarding films featured his exploits, according to NJB sponsor Nate Brouwer, of Truckee.

Kelly also had enjoyed fishing and swimming in the area, and had been living at Donner Lake prior to his death with his mother and two sisters.

The other people left dead in the shootings that night were Derek Jensen,

23, of Reno, and Nathan Viljoen, 23, of Fallon.
