Report: Know your cell number

Know the number of your cellular telephone in case of emergency ” but be prepared for a delay in getting your 911 call routed if calling from your cell phone, the Nevada County grand jury reported Monday.

In the report that was posted online, jurors wrote they had discovered a gap in their knowledge of emergency services in the county.

In their findings, they noted, “(Emergency medical services) can’t help if they can’t find you.”

They recommended that members of the public:

– Know where they are located so they can give the information to an emergency dispatcher.

– Post addresses prominently on the street with reflective signs to make it easy for responders to find an address at night. Also, keep a list of the names of your address, telephone number, community and county by the telephone so visitors can see it.

– Let the dispatcher ask the questions.

– Learn first-aid techniques, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the location and use of the nearest defibrillator.

Jurors also warned people that calls made from a cellular telephone are routed to the California Highway Patrol. Response can be delayed as CHP personnel figure out where the caller is located and what is the nearest responding agency.

“The time an emergency medical service vehicle takes to reach you may differ greatly depending on where you choose to live, work, play, or travel,” jurors wrote in their report.
