Report: UC president’s office has lost credibility

OAKLAND (AP) ” The University of California’s office of the president has lost credibility with the governing regents and the 10 campuses in the system because of poor performance, a report released Friday stated.

The report, commissioned by the UC system and conducted by the Monitor Group of Cambridge, Mass., said the president’s office makes bad decisions without explanation and mismanages capital projects that costs the system tens of millions of dollars a year.

The consultant’s report is part of a yearlong, $7-million review conducted in response to questions by the regents and demands from state legislators to reform the system’s administration.

The report is the latest black eye for the UC system, which has been publicly criticized for an executive pay scandal which was followed by UC President Robert Dynes’ announcement in August that he would resign by June or when a replacement is found. Top administrators were given millions in perks that were never disclosed to the public or the university’s regents and those perks came at the same time student fees increased significantly.

The president’s office “must act quickly to restore its credibility and repair the University’s governance model,” the report stated.
